Senior Health and Chiropractic Care
~ By Gary Pirnat, Doctor of Chiropractic
For many of us, as we approach our Golden Years we get the sense that they may not be as golden as we have been led to believe. Our body aches and pains become more frequent and in more places than in previous years. Visits to the doctor become a monthly not annual event, and for some even more frequent. Our cabinets are filled with numerous prescriptions to help control hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and other serious and perhaps not so serious ailments. We move slower, wear thicker glasses and for some have now undergone a surgical procedure or two. Ah yes… the Golden Years.
Fortunately there is a well established profession that over the decades has become part of the American mainstream of health care; chiropractic. Chiropractic has proven time and time again to be of great benefit to people of all ages as well as to seniors and their special needs. Once shunned by the medical community and insurance companies, chiropractors are now the recipients of frequent patient referrals from medical doctors and are included in most, if not all health insurance policies for seniors in California in one form or another.
While many seniors may feel they are too old to be treated by a doctor of chiropractic in most cases nothing could be further from the truth. Over the years the natural tendency of the body includes the gradual stiffening of the muscles and joints. The gentle joint and soft tissue manipulation techniques employed by many chiropractors can provide long term pain relief allowing patients to regain mobility and invite a spring to their step. Even with underlying arthritis gentle manipulation can effectively maximize joint function lessening inflammation and pain. All too often patients, due to other underlying health related condition, are unable to take pain relieving or anti-inflammatory medications. For those patients chiropractic can be utilized as a great natural healing tool, an aide to restoring joint and muscle health.
So, with the summer months at hand and the tendency for everyone to get out and enjoy life make an appointment with a doctor of chiropractic for an evaluation of your joint and muscle condition, and perhaps within a few treatments you’ll start to feel somewhat of your “young self” again.
